STUDIES :

DIPLOM in Physics, University of BONN (1963-69).

PhD in experimental Nuclear Physics / Moessbauer?Effect in ISKP / University of BONN under the supervision of Prof. E. Bodenstedt (1969-72); DAAD stipend (1968-72).

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

1976-84 Experimental antiproton physics at CERN/EP.

1985-90 Persuading my proposal on "Possible Applications of Ferroelectrics in Acceleration Physics" at CERN/EP?LEP?PS divisions. H. Riege / CERN was working on this until 1998.

1988-92 a. Novel acceleration techniques (terrestrial / cosmic), partly in collaboration with E.J.N. Wilson / CERN.

b. Dark matter/axion research: A proposal with A. De Rujula to use the Mössbauer-effect to search for "Nuclear Axions" [CERN/ISOLDE (IS300)].

A proposal with E. A. Paschos / Dortmund to utilize Bragg-scattering by single crystal detectors to search for (solar) axions was further followed in collaboration with SOLAX (Leader F.T. Avignone III). Later, almost all of the low-threshold dark matter experiments re-evaluate(d) their data according to this suggestion.

1991-92: I worked experimentally, also as DAAD fellow for 3 months, in the Institute of Biophysics, in Kaiserslautern/Germany, searching for a signature for dark matter (e.g. relic axions) from biological / biophysical observations; the method used was via the non-invasive spontaneous bioluminescence from single cells in culture.

1994-98 a. Spiral waves in excitable media (their role in biology is as yet unknown). CERN accepted (Jan. 1997) our suggestion with Prof. D. Malchow (Biology Department / University of Konstanz) to perform relevant biophysical investigations with the LHC test bending magnets.

b. Non-classical properties of new 3D quasi quantum states of charged particles inside a magnetic field, and their potential involvement in all disciplines, where cyclotron resonance/radiation occur (accelerators, ... , biology).

1994-95 A suggestion to use accelerators in atmospheric physics (was not encouraged by CERN at that time).

1996-97 a. I suggested to CPLEAR / CERN to search for antigravity in the neutral Kaon system via seasonal modulations of CP parameters, utilizing sun's gravitational potential changes.

 b. I participated in the Energy Amplifier experiment at CERN.

1999- spokesperson of the CAST experiment at CERN. In parallel, I work on astrophysical signatures for axions from the Sun and beyond.

Other experiments: CAST

TOTAL NUMBER OF PUBLICATIONS :            ~90 + one patent in ferroelectrics, with ~1100 citations

PERMANENT POSITION: Professor, Physics Department, University of Patras, Greece.

With G. Charpak (for CERN) I was the main supervisor for the PhD-thesis of A. Gougas.

OPEN ACCESS:

With the article we [DHH Hoffmann, J. Jacoby, K. Z.] published in CERN Courier in

2003 we suggested for the first time to release also data in astroparticle physics.

I am still working on this general idea and the SCOAP3 initiative of CERN.
